I had been working in the mail censorship department in Belfast for some time, when our office was bombed and destroyed. It was about the time of the relocation to new premises that my brother was killed. I felt that it was unfair to my parents for me to join the WRNS until they had had some time to grieve after my brother’s death. My brother was killed fairly early on in the war, he was a pilot, and had flown before the war. Because his eyesight was bad, he couldn’t become a fighter pilot but he was in the Fleet Air Arm and flew planes for Navigators to gain practise. He was being sent to Trinidad with two complete schools of navigation. There were instructors, wives and children. He even had his car aboard the ship but they were torpedoed in the area of the Bermuda Triangle, they had almost reached their destination. Every single soul on board was lost. I still can’t bear the tragedy.
