This story was submitted to the People's War site by Louise Angell of the CSV Action desk at ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Derby, on behalf of Jane Thompson. The author fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
My husband was a sheet metal worker, a reserved occupation, so he didn't get called up. He did volunteer but was refused. One night we were sitting in the car. A huge thunderstorm started and all the barrage balloons across the city came undone. On another night we were in the cinema in Chaddesden, Derby and a bomb dropped on Chaddesden Park. It made a very loud noise and everyone ran for the door.
We had to choose between having a wall built outside the front door for protection, and a large metal table. We chose the table and slept under it every night - me, my husband and our two children.
