I was an evacuee twice at that time once to Catworth in Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire) then to Norton St Philip Somerset. It was through living in Tuxford and having a rent collector (James Roffey ) talking of his being an evacuee too that he eventually in 1995 contacted me to ask if I would be willing to join him and his brother John, in trying to set up an EVACUEES REUNION ASSOCIATION. He then set a date - Wednesday 24th January 1996, for us to, plus the reverend Alan Mumford from Bawtry to meet in front dining room of the NEWCASTLE ARMS HOTEL to draw up an inaugural meeting with a constitution for such an association. As I no longer attend regularly ass the meeting has moved to London, believe it is still functioning.
They were given permission to join the Armistice Parade each year, marching past the cenotaph. In 1996 we were guided by the Imperial War Museum and sponsored by saga. Royal Hudd was a Honary member and Michael Aspel and Henry Sandon, our patrons.
James and I were invited to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Nottingham, to speak on the work of the association, on 4th March 1996. Unfortunately this didn't bring in as much response as we hoped, as it went on the air at 10.30 am.
I have some pamphlets from the days when I was member number 3, plus photos taken of my sister and I, together with the lady we were billeted to and her son, taken in their garden.
