I lived in Ipswich In a house with my sisters in my parents. One night the air raid siren went off, my father was an Police War Reservist at the time, so he went out. We had an Anderson shelter, but also we had a Morrison cage in our cellar. When the all clear went we didn’t hear it because we were rushing into the Morrison, we were there for 2 hours. It was strange to think that we were sitting down there drinking tea when there was no need to be down there. It was quite humorous.
During the war we didn’t have sweets or cakes. My mother said every time you have a tea or coffee take the sugar you would have used and put it in a jar, and when you have a pound jar, she would make coconut ice. My sister liked sweets very much, so she got through her sweet ration very quickly, and we would bribe her with them to come on walks with us.
