We had to go down the shelter every night during the Blitz - it was very cold and damp, but we got used to it. We used to play cards, Newmarket or Rummy. My Dad bought a mouth organ, so we all had a good old sing song, which drowned out the noise of the Ack Ack and bombs.

It was during one very bad raid that we saw a spider and me and my Mum and 2 sisters ran out in the garden. Dad went berserk, said we should be more frightened of the bombs! This often happened, we were all scared of creepy-crawlies.

Some nights my brother was on duty in the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard, so we used to have more room in the bed then. How we all managed to sleep down in that shelter I don't know - there were 6 of us, plus the dog!
