I was six years old and we lived in the village. We never went to the city because everything from soap to salt and pepper was home made. We got everything we needed. If we really needed something, our parents went to the city. On average, people went to the city twice a year. When the beggars used to come, they brought news from the city. They told the news through songs, whilst begging. In Punjabi, they sang “Stop Hitler, the army has surrendered”. Everybody used to talk about him.
