My grandfathers friend (Sid Witherow) lived in london during World War Two.
He was about 13 when it started. He had 4 brothers, two of whom were older and so he felt as if he should sneak away from his mother and try and join the services. Once they began recruiting members for the army, he said he went to the local hall to sign up but another man who lived in the same street, aged around 21 took him back to his home. Saying that the real men were the ones who could take care of their families. Sid told my grandfather that the older man broke down as they reached the street where they both lived. Sid lost both his brothers Samuel and William at Dunkirk.

I wrote this poem about it

I had four brothers and now I have two
They were footsoldiers but others flew
I wasn’t the only one this happened to
Everyone, everyone, everyone knew
And now you do too
