My mum told me this. "I can remember (at the age of 4 in 1943) being taken by my Dad into the town. As we passed under the railway bridge, a troop train passed over, carrying soldiers, probably American. Dad said to me 'Wave to the soldiers.' Being only four, I did. And it rained sweets!! Everyone around me rushed to pick them up. I can still remember the magical feeling of the sweets raining down around me."
