This story has been submitted by Margaret Cowell on behalf of Mabel Ulliot who understands the terms and conditions.

The alert came about 8.00pm one night. You could have heard a pin drop outside. There was no wind and no planes up. All of us were puzzled. I was at the field gate but
it was so cold I kept going in. There was nothing to do as it was too dark. We waited all night until the next morning when the all clear sounded. When Reverend Storer went down into Cranswick he heard that Winston Churchill had been asleep on a train down the railway line. I thought “Well, that’s a rum one, having to dodge in and out because he is asleep down the line!” I was mad because we got little enough sleep because of the air raid alerts.
