I remember one night we were all down the shelter, fast asleep, and we were woken up by the back gate being opened. My Dad got up to see who it was and all we could see in the Blackout was someone in uniform and tin helmet. We all thought the Germans had landed, what a fright! (There was a threatened invasion on at the time.)

But it was only the man next door, home on unexpected leave. He couldn't get an answer at his door; his wife was in the shelter with the people on the other side as we didn't have room in ours.

Once we'd got over our initial fright, we laughed for ages!
