Where I lived in Franche, Kidderminster, was on the main A442 to Bridgnorth. There is a pub on that junction called the Three crowns and Sugarloaf. Well when they were building up to the D-Day invasions there was a steady stream of American troops passing on that road. As the pub was there they used to stop for a rest. Us kids used to run out and get given fruit and sweets. Their equipment fascinated me, they had tanks, big massive lorries, personnel carriers, jeeps and sometimes a staff car with an officer in it! It was totally fascinating for us kids and they were all so friendly.

I also remember going round town with my mom and standing in lots of queues and watching the soldiers sitting around drinking. I remember being sent to the shop to fetch the rations for my mom and me. I was only 5 so you can tell they didn't weigh much!
