This story was submitted to the Peoples War site by: Andy Ryan
My Family and I were bombed out of 36 Studly Road early in the war. Normally we would hide under the stairs during an air raid, but our neighbour had an Anderson shelter which we were in when the bombs dropped on the two houses opposite, flattening them and destroying the windows and roof of our house. We lived in a local Dr’s house in Claremount Road as Dr Barr was away at sea. Our Favourite pastime was collecting shrapnel on the way to school, we would swap shrapnel with each other to complete our collections of the biggest and most interesting pieces. We stayed at the Dr’s house until our house was made safe for habitation, which was close to the end of the war.
