Just before the attack on Tobruk my father was on sentry duty all night and when he returned in the morning to go off duty, his relief met him and explained that he had a very bad stomache upset and ask if my father would take another back to back watch on his behalf.
My Father agreed and his colleague returned to their tent, but very soon a shell landed and killed him. My father obviously survived as he was on guard duty, but his sergeant put him on a charge for taking the double duty and not being in the tent!
All the men in the unit were very upset by this, but my father told them not to be.
This sergeant was quite regular in his toilet habits and every morning before dawn disappeared to the latrine (which was a log over an open pit.
That night my father warned all the men not to use the latrine, and in the early hours of the morning sawed half way through the log!
All the men were awake early to hear the outcome, and they were'nt disappointed.....
All kept quiet and the sergeant never knew who dropped him in it!
