Mrs Starr worked as a nurse in Manchester during part of the war. She remembers the aerial bombing and how frightening it was. On a number of occasions, she hid in the cellar of her cousins pub in Salford. The war was still on when she returned back to county Down. She was reluctant to go back to Manchester because of the bombing and remained in Northern Ireland.
