I joined the R.A.F in late 1941 and having been 'kitted'’ out at
Padgate, near Warrington, I was sent to Blackpool where we
lived in Boarding houses. We were formed into squads
of 24 men and trained in marching and drill in the side roads
of the town.
The day came when our drill corporal decided to take us on a
short route march along the front at Blackpool. We were marching
along in formation, with the corporal walking along side the squad shouting at he top of his voice, criticising our efforts and using
language which was not suitable for “human consumption”!
I leave it to your imagination as to our reactions when a very dear
old lady came rushing along the promenade threatening the
corporal with her umbrella (or walking stick, I can’t remember
which) and yelling at the top of her voice words such as ‘Don’t
you speak to those nice boys like that-be kind to them-they may
soon be overseas fighting the Germans and helping to win the war.’
