my fathers name is Robert Gardiner and at the time of the war he was a Royal fusilier 2nd Battalion stationed at Warley Barracks in Essex.
5 days before D-Day he was posted to the Oxford and Bucks light infantry. He sailed from Portsmouth hard on D-Day. He was in with 3 Div.and remembers Glen Miller's song Moonlight Serenade being played on some load speker in the distance. He was made to move amunision from a pile that was already on fire. He talks of gunfire and explosions, but keeps silent of the pain and dying he must have seen, this is the war he wants to forget. He often tells us of great fun times and brave men around him but from here we seem to lose track of any records of his group.He landed on Sword / Red, He went down to Caen, onto Nimegan and through the forest between Goch and Cleve. We have now been able to get him into The Market Gardens Vets club, where he has attended two of there meetings, boy was he proud this rememberace day to wear his medals and stand with others that share this proud day with him. My dad was very young on D-Day (17) born 13.12.26 wondering is he one of the youngest? the storys he tells are so interesting but would love to hear from anyone else that was in the same unit. This would make his xmas as we have tryed so hard to find others that were with him.
