I was born and brought up in Wigmore, Herefordshire, but I had a 9-month-old child when the war started, and went to live in Llanwyddyn in Wales, where my husband was working with the Forestry Commission.
We had no contact with the war at all, except for hearing the bombers going to and from Liverpool. I was living in rented rooms, and the lady whose house it was once heard a plane going overhead and said, "Go out and look - it's one of ours!" She was outside, waving to the pilot.
I went out, but it wasn't one of ours, and as soon as I got out of the door I heard a bomp, bomp, bomp as the bombs came down.I could see them. They just used to dump their bombs anywhere if they hadn't been able to drop them on the target. I didn't have time to be frightened, though.
