WHEN ON HOLIDAY WITH MY GRANDMOTHER IN
BIRMINGHAM WAR WAS DECLARED. THERE WAS SUCH A COMMOTION AND EVERYONE WAS SAD.
THE CHILDREN IN THE STREET WHERE I WAS
VISITING AND I WERE ALL EXCITED WHEN BARRAGE
BALLOONS WERE HOISTED IN THE SKY.
I WAS RUSHED HOME AND MY MOTHER VOLENTEERED TO BE A AIR-RAID WARDEN. MY FATHER, BROTHER AND I WOULD OFTEN STAND AT THE DOOR TO SEE IF MOTHER WAS O.K
AFTER A FEW YEARS OF WAR THE AMERICANS JOINED US AND I WAS A FEW YEARS OLDER TOO. THE AMERICAN TROOPS WERE SENT TO THE RHONDDA VALLEY TO TRAIN FOR D/DAY. SO OF-COURSE THE VALLEY WAS ALL EXCITED TO SEE THE AMERICANS WHO GAVE US CHOCOLATE, FRUIT AND LOTS OF TINNRD MEAT WHICH WE HAD'NT SEEN FOR A FEW YEARS.I WROTE TO ONE G.I. WHO WAS STAYING WITH US FOR THE TWO WEEKS THEY STAYED IN THE VALLEY AND WE CORRESPONDED FOR QUITE A WHILE.WE WERE SORRY TO SEE THEM GO AS WE HAD TO RETURN TO OUR MEGRE RATIONING AGAIN.
