One of the things I remember about the war is being woken in the middle of the night, and being taken to the air raid shelter, it was usually cold and dark and all I wanted to do was sleep. In the shelter it was noisy with babies crying, people talking, the air in the shelter was very cold to start with but soon became very hot and airless. Some of the shelters were underground, and some of them were on top of the ground. My dad was an air raid patrol warden, he had to watch from a watch tower which was usually on top of a tall factory roof, he would have a telephone line straight through to the fire station and using a map reference would ring to tell them where the fire was located, my dad also relieved a friend of his one night a week at the horse repository and would take me with him which I liked very much, one night a fire started while we were there, people in the street helped my dad to get the horses out of the stables and the fire brigade put out the fire. I have many more memories of the war, but that will have to be another time.
