I was called up in 1942,before then I had been working at odd jobs in London.I was first sent to Blackpool for basic training. I was trained as a driver but because I am just a little chap I had to be lifted up into the lorry cab.We were taught to drive in the sand dunes so that we could cope with difficult conditions and learnt something about vehicle mechanics and maintenance.They were all good blokes and I enjoyed my training though I didn't enjoy being away from home.
I was transferrred to the Royal Artillery and sent off to a searchlight site where I was responsible for maintaining the power to the lights.I then had 2 weeks embarkation leave before going to India and more training,this time in the jungle. I then went on to Malaya and ended the war in Singapore. During the war years I met my good mate Jack Hill and we remain friends to this day.
