This story was told to Christine at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005
I was ten when war broke out. I remember one of our old neighbours had died and we went as a family to pay our respects at the graveside, everybody did then. There was a heavy storm. When we were half way there a barrage balloon was struck by lightening. We decided it wasn't safe at all so gave up and went home.
Another memory I have is of Irishmen coming to Hull build the dug outs. We liked them. We used to cook pans of chips and take them to them.
