My name's Jean Cridge. I was 75 at Christmas 2005. I was born in 1930.
I was just a child during the war. We lived in Todmorden. My father had been the caretaker at my school. You’d climb over our wall, and you’d be in the school yard. So when the sirens went, quite a few of the children came over to our house.
We had gas masks too. I wasn’t actually scared, I think there was too much going on. And, as I say, I wasn’t very old.
I think everybody was worried, and upset, hoping that nothing happened, with my dad being away, and waiting week after week for a letter to come, you know. He was in the forces, in the Royal Engineers. I don’t know where he went, he was all over the place. And mum was very worried about him. There was just the two of us living at home, but he wasn’t away very long.
