In September 1939 when I was 8 years old, I went as an evacuee from Sellyoak, Birmingham to Wooten-under-edge in Gloucestershire. The lady who looked after me was kind, and I was happy at school but naturally homesick. My brothers (13 and 16) were billeted in another house in the village. After a year we returned home, but after bombing on our house, we moved to Trowell, Nottinghamshire which became our family home.
