This is one of many stories told to me by my mother who was born in London in 1928.
“I was about 15. Mum and Dad put me on the night train to Penzance at Paddington. It was more like a troop carrier - there were plenty of blokes, all together. People weren’t like they are today! I had to stand all the way to Plymouth where I at last got a seat.
I wore a black suit (from C and A in Croydon) and a little black hat. I was out to work and grown up and always dressed up properly!
There were no refreshments on trains in those days and I wasn’t offered a cup of tea when I arrived at Grandma’s the next morning!â€
