Memory of one of bombing missions over Germany, when the Germans first used a cunning device we nicknamed “SCARECROW”.
On this particular raid, we could see a lot more of our bombers going down in flames than was normal. It was most frightening. When we got back to base it was the main topic of all crews at briefing. Later, after investigation by intelligence, it turned out that most of the “shot down” bombers were only flaming objects used to demoralise our crews.
