My name’s Peg Williams, and I’m 88 years young!
I was living in Sale in Manchester at the time. All I did during the war, was have children. I had three little boys by 1942. That meant I was exempt from doing war work. I was married to a butcher, and he was exempt, as he was doing war work as a butcher. Awful to say it, but we had a good war. We had sausages, and sausages! The boys grew up very strong. It was good.
My husband had to work out people’s rations. I used to work in the shop a bit. We lived near Trafford Park, and that was very big on arms, so it was quite a risky spot. I don’t know what they did at Trafford Park, but it was war work.
We went round on bicycles, with a basket on the front, and a basket on the back, to put the lads in, so we could get around on just two bikes.
We got some firebombs, little things that just spluttered down. If they hit the right place, they’d cause a fire, but otherwise they just spluttered out.
We actually dug down into the.. well, there was no underpart to the shops, but we dug out underneath, so that if necessary, we COULD go down, but we got tired of that, and eventually we just used to go to bed.
I hate to say it, but we did have a nice time. Lots of charity concerts, and things like that. And generally, people were a lot closer than they are now.
