I would leave my house in Wickford at 4pm and cycle to Chelmsford in the dark.

I worked at Hoffmans. My job was to view the bearings for Rolls Royce. This involved checking them to make sure they were of a certain standard and not rusty. If they were no good they were rejected. I worked at Hoffmans until part of it was bombed and then I got a job at Marconi. At Marconi my job was to wind coils. We were not sure what they were used for. I always worked nights.

I had a daughter, who was nine. We lived with some friends and my daughter was looked after during the day.

When I think about the war, I think about Chelmsford being really bombed and it was bombed so badly that we all had to walk home from Chelmsford because the town was so badly destroyed.
