I was born in 1944 in Birchington during a bombing raid. Andrew Davis, the conductor was born at the same time a few miles away. We lived with my grandparents and my mum was a children's nurse working right up until I was born.
I remember the blackout curtains. I think they were fixed on a rod. We probably had them for quite a while after the war because you just couldn't get things. I think we wore underwear made from parachutes! We had a doll's house made from a tea chest and I had a spinning top made from a British hand grenade which dad brought from...he wouldn't tell us where!
We just accepted this because we didn't have many toys; it was a bit hard to spin though!
