"Although the atmosphere of impending invasion of France was constantly in evidence, a take-off at 4 o'clock on the morning of June 6th signified nothing really unusual.
As our Lancaster plunged down through the clouds to the required mid channel height, we could hardly believe our eyes. The expanse of channel below, usually deserted, was completely 鈥渄otted鈥 with ships of all types and sizes.
It was an unforgettable sight. We knew then why our particular target 鈥 an enemy shore battery - just had to be silenced. It was 鈥淒-Day鈥 and without warning, we were in the thick of it."
