I was 11 years old when war began and as soon as it was declared (on the Sunday)the air-raid sirens were sounded.
My two older sisters and I were attending Sunday school at the time. We were ushered outside where we were met with panicking parents carrying our gas masks as everyone assumed we were being attacked.
As I lived in the country I cannot remember much of the devastating bombing which took place. I do, however, recall having to walk through a gas chamber with our masks on and holding my breath until I came out.
As a teenager, when the war was over, I joined the crowds in London to celebrate.
