I was born in 1937 and in 1939 my father was called up as a Naval reservist to serve on HMS Rawalpindi-an ex P and O Liner, refitted as a merchant cruiser. We lived in the suburbs of Manchester where my mother was a teacher. She was evacuated with her school to Marple Bridge,Cheshire-near Stockport. On November 23rd 1939 news came that my father's ship had been sunk in the North Atlantic by the German battlecruiser "Scharnhorst".I was two years old at the time and remember nothing of my father.
