This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Martin Hough a volunteer with WM CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Ivy Growcott and has been added to the site with her permission Ivy Growcott fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

I worked in the local Ammo factory in the filling shop, my job was putting 808 purple explosives and TNT into the bombs. All the employee’s in this department wore white suits, my friend was pouring this liquid into the bombs, when she splashed a few drops onto her shoulder, thinking she had wiped it off. On her break she went outside having taken the white top off, but didn’t realise the liquid was still on her blouse. Whilst standing outside, the sun was very strong and was shining directly onto my friend, the next thing I can remember was my friend lying on the ground, screaming with her arm hanging off, after that I was in deep shock for a while.
