This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Nadine from the People’s War team on behalf of Albert McVean and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I was a territorial and was called up for duty on 3rd September 1939 in the 9th Battalion Cameronians as 2nd Lieutenant. After duty in the South of England, I volunteered for Africa. I served with the 1st Battalion Nigerian Regiment before going to Burma via India and Ceylon where I fought down the Kabaw Valley in monsoon conditions against the Japanese Imperial Forces.

After 5 years away I returned to the UK in April 1945 as a Major and married Agnes on 1st May! What a risk, but we have celebrated our Diamond Wedding Anniversary on 1st May 2005!!!
