Myself and friend off duty from 22nd B G Hospital in St Marks Square, Venice, 1946

“This story was submitted to the People’s War site by a volunteer on behalf of Mrs Eveyln Fowler and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Fowler fully understands the site's terms and conditions”.

'I was posted to the Army Blood Transfusion Unit at Southmead Hospital Bristol, and billeted out in civilian accommodation, spending a short time assembling transfusion equipment ready for collecting from blood donors.

Thereafter transferred in convoy to Dorchester in Dorset for six weeks, touring around the Army camps and villages, collecting blood from soldiers and civilians, which was sent back to Bristol every night.

Next I was transferred to a Camp Reception Centre at Barry in South Wales, where I spent several months nursing those not fit enough for active service, before being moved to Shaftsbury Military hospital.

Volunteering for service overseas, I was posted to Chester Military Hospital and then Copthorne Military Hospital, before my overseas posting to Italy came through.’
