I was in church (Eastville Park Methodist) in the evening when the big raid on Castle St started - the minister had chosen a hymn that included the words "will you scatter like frightened sheep" - and that's what we did. We got home even though shrapnel was falling like rain. I was 12 years old, and it sticks in your mind.
Another time, one evening coming out of church, the lorries came under a bridge on Muller Rd, and all these soldiers dressed in khaki got out and just collapsed in the path, exhausted.
