The first time we were evacuated we were so miserable (bullied by the only child in the family) that my brother threatened that we would run away unless we were brought home.

We returned home and were re-evacuated from Clapham, South London, to a place in Devon near Halsworthy. My brother went to a farm and I was just up the road. We were very happy and stayed about 18 months. I was taught to cook by the old lady’s companion (Miss Hatch). I returned to London in the spring of 1942 and in 1944. When the V1s and V2s started again I went back to Devon- but this time to a farm run by Miss Hatch’s brother. This family had 4 sons but when we went to Devon in 1999 there wasn’t a single member of the family listed for that area.
