This contribution to People’s War was received by the Action Desk at ѿý Radio Norfolk and submitted to the website with the permission and on behalf of Mrs Barbara H Smith
Towards the end of the War at the age of 14 living in London, east Sheen SW14 I was looking out of my bedroom window one night and saw this strange looking aircraft going across the sky with a flame coming out of its tail and making a peculiar clanking noise. It disappeared out of sight and I read in the newspaper the next morning that the first V1 weapons had been sent over from Germany (we called them “doodle bugs”).
The V2 weapons that followed on were far worse as they were rockets which landed anywhere without warning. I was walking through Temple Gardens one day when one landed everyone threw themselves on the ground. I don’t know how many casualties that one caused.
