I volunteered on 20th November 1942 at 17½ years old in the ATS. I did my training at Halifax Barracks and trained as a cook. I was sent to Surrey to form a Battalion in the Artillery. I stayed around Chester from 1943 to 1944.We were split up as some of the soldiers went in the infantry. One of my friends went over on D Day and I got a bundle of my letter back on 9th November 1944, he was missing presumed killed. I was sent to Dulwich in London and went through the V1 and V2 bombing raids. I was then posted to Morecambe on VE Day when I got married. When VJ Day came I was allowed to put in a months notice to come out of the army. I had been in 3 years. While waiting for my discharge I met a sargeant who was with me at Dulwich and he couldn’t remember who he was with shellshock. I was able to tell him who he was, this was at Bedford Barracks.
