In Purfleet when there was an air raid warning everyone had to run to air raid shelters carved out of the cliff. One evening it happened and we all had to run (including by Great Grandmother Sarah), taking what we could for the night in the shelter. The next morning an enormous pair of bloomers were found in the road and displayed in the local Post Office window. Stella (my Grandmother) recognised them but Sarah was adament they were not hers. Rationing coupons made my embarrassed Grandmother collect them for her.
