I was 7 when war was declared, on the 3rd Sept, and we were on holiday at Scarborough.
At first I was very upset because we had booked to see a show at the openair theatre, which of course had to be cancelled.
For the next 6 yars I remember it was a very exciting time, in 1941 onwards every night at
7-00pm we had an air raid and it was down to the shelters until the ealry hours. 2 miles away was a battery of AckAck guns which would fire at the planes going over (mainly on route to Liverpool) only once did the Germans drop any bombs which was early December 1941. One house 400yards away being destroyed and some people killed.
We had, at our school a number of evacuees from London, and although food was scarce we did not go hungry.
Generally as a child it was an exciting time, like a real life computer game. Although when the telegrams came, they were unfortunately for real. Many of our friends being killed or wounded.
