My father was a fireman on the L.N.E.R. and the trains were not infrequently machine gunned - they we mostly goods trains. However he found an intriguing way of supplementing our meat ration - he would throw pieces of coal at rabbits which frequented the adjacent embankments. If he downed one he would stop the train and recover it and bring it home for dinner - usually with a black, large dent in it's head. The rabbit was then hung on the close line and skinned for the table. I have never eaten rabbit since!
