THE BLITZ

I was only a child when it happened.
The Blitz and the horror of war.
I was only aged ten when I noticed
The war was outside my door.
There were sandbags up to the windows,
There were blackouts and dugouts and drill.
There were soldiers and sailors and airmen
And the name we all spoke was Churchill.

It was nights of air raids I dreaded.
The throb of the planes overhead.
My parents, their fear was frightful
On me, I thought we’d be dead.
I sat in the shelter and shaking
From fear or cold I know not.
Hear bombs exploding around us
And wondered if this was my lot.

The long night turned to the dawning,
With the wail of the sirens ‘all clear.'
I knew there’d be people in mourning
For the damage and deaths so near.
We switched on the wireless to listen
To the news that was always so grim.
I wept for the fear of the nighttimes,
When the bombing would all start again.
