I was in the Edlington ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard and I can remember Conisbrough ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard used to attack us and we’d have mock battles.
On one particular night I was on duty with my mate and it was pitch black out there on the look out post surrounded by sandbags. It was quiet too, so when we heard this rustling in the grass in the field alongside us we thought it was that lot from Conisbrough come to surprise us again. So we got our rifles ready and sat and waited as the rustling sound got nearer. Then when we thought they were right on us we jumped up to surprise them – but it was just two donkeys munching on the grass. We felt like two donkeys I can tell you!
