I must have been about 17 at the time. I was a trainee tracer at Fletchers, which was a factory that made sugar machinery but at this time it was involved in war work. I was a trainee tracer. This involved tracing blueprints of boat (vet) engines.
One morning I was cycling to work and I was going past the drill hall on Kingsway and these planes zoomed over, flying quite low. They were macine gunning as they were flying. I was terrified and shot off my bike and lay down until they'd gone. I think these planes had been over to Rolls Royce and were on the way home.
My brother Robert John Swan was a regular in the Royal Navy and was serving on HMS Dorchester which was sunk in the Indian ocean. They were eventually picked up and taken to South Africa.
