Born December 18th 1926, I went to Rectory Road, Yorkshire Infants School and I remember tin hats, gas masks and hobnail boots. Dad moved to Grays, Essex to be a Fire Warden at Magnet Timber Yard. I wasn’t evacuated, and we saw the bombing of doodlebugs at Rookery View. We were told to leave our windows open. While making jam sandwiches when the bombing took place, we watched dog fights in the sky, but we weren’t frightened. We later went to the pictures at the Regal Cinema.
Normandy Landings: American tanks went right up to the Deneholes roundabout, we were allowed to see in them and they gave us sweets and very hard biscuits. I got a hiding from dad for being out late with the Americans.
I remember the troops coming back from the Normandy Landings. I went to Tilbury Docks to cheer the troops on.
We had a VE party
Mulberry Harbour: it was a secret, but they were being built in William Street, Grays. There were three big square ponds, and we went swimming in them.
