In 1943 I decided to go to Coventry, having an auntie there whose son had told me that wages there were excellent. Having worked in an auctioneers office for three years at the princely sum of £1 per week, I considered that as I had another year before being conscripted I should try and improve my financial situation. I moved in with my auntie whose two sons had already been conscripted and I started work at the Daimler factory working on a capstan lathe making bits for Lancaster bombers. Within a month I was making over £5 per week. Whilst living there we had one or two minor air raids but of course the major raids had been a year or so earlier. What really surprised me that while the centre of Coventry was devastated the surrounding factory areas were almost untouched. At the beginning of 1944 I started my three and half years of military service.
