My most vivid memory of the war happened when I was about 7 years old. Across the road from the house I lived in was a warehouse - a Taylor's Depository - which had stables at the rear. One night a bomb hit the depository and my mother, brother and I stood on the doorstep and watched as the Fire Brigade arrived. Our next door neighbour was a policeman and I remember him and his son rushing out of their house in their pyjamas and along with some other men, broke down the stable door and freed the horses. I can still see them in my mind's eye gallopping up and down the road until they were all rounded up.
