My wife Jean was a child of about ten at the time, and she was playing with a friend in Gerard Street near Preston Circus in Brighton when they heard an aircraft coming over. They looked up, only to see a German aircraft, machine guns blazing. Terrified, they dived for cover in a front garden until the plane had gone. She still has flashbacks about the incident, which has stayed with her all this time.
