On life in the WRENS Irene says — “I loved it, I lived for going ashore and dancing”. She joined in 1941 serving firstly in HMS Valkyrie in Douglas, Isle of Man. She was later posted to Ainsdale where she remembers — “ I used to go to tea dances in Southport and also dancing at the Tower Ballroom in New Brighton and sometimes on the tram to the Grafton Rooms in Liverpool”.
