She stands beside the window steady gaze
Along the road to where the postman's gait
Is slower to negotiate the maze
Of paths and barking dogs that lie in wait.
She snatched the letter, kneeling in the hall,
His love leapt from the page, each word put down,
His friends, his colleagues, answering the call,
Had chosen blue and some had chosen brown.
He chose the blue, but nowhere near as blue
As eyes that shone, as only love-eyes can,
Then wrenched away, their lashes tipped with dew,
To fight in fleecy clouds and be a man.

She sits beside the window stony-willed,
The envelope was yellow, he was killed.
